The French have a saying 'jolie laide' which translates roughly to 'beautiful ugly' and refers to something that is unconventionally beautiful. It is usually a saying used when speaking of a women with strong, unconventional features that make her beautiful in a way that does not conform to traditional standards, but I feel it works well for this
